From Kim and Kris' monster-size rock to Beyoncé and Jay-Z's 18-carat mega-sparkler, we dish on the diamonds.
By Jocelyn Vena

After <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/spears_britney/artist.jhtml">Britney Spears</a> confirmed her <a href="/news/articles/1676120/britney-spears-is-engaged.jhtml">engagement to longtime beau Jason Trawick</a> last Friday, fans wanted to know everything about the ring, a four-carat diamond designed by Neil Lane. Trawick — Brit's former agent — popped the question after working with famed jeweler Lane on the design, according to <a href="http://stylenews.peoplestylewatch.com/2011/12/18/jason-trawick-britney-spears-engagement-ring" target="_blank">People.com</a>. The site also reported that Trawick wanted a crown-like band. In addition to the mega-sparkler at the center of the tiara-style setting, the hubby-to-be also had 90 small round diamonds added around the band. Spears debuted the ring during a trip to Las Vegas over the weekend to celebrate her fiancé's birthday. <div class="player-placeholder right" id="vid:720382" width="240" height="211"></div> "Jason is a romantic and when I asked him to tell me about Britney and what the ring would represent to them so I could find inspiration, his response was always the same — she is his princess!" Lane told the website. "Jason didn't want an over-the-top ring with a giant stone." Minya Oh, the author of "Bling Bling: Hip Hop's Crown Jewels," told MTV News she was pleasantly surprised by how understated the rock is. "The ring is so damn classy! It's [four] carats, which by Hollywood standards these days is practically microscopic," Oh said. "The setting is a tiny crown but both that and the thin diamond-studded band are done so delicately, from afar the focus is still on that bright white center stone. Nothing about the ring overwhelms her hand, and nothing screams, 'Please believe my relationship is real!' " She added, "This is the kind of ring a pop icon has when they're ready for something that means more than just the ring." This is hardly Spears' first engagement ring, however. When her <a href="/news/articles/1676192/britney-spears-engaged-k-fed-comments.jhtml">ex Kevin Federline</a> popped the question back in 2004, the former back-up dancer gave the pop princess a five-carat diamond <a href="http://www.people.com/people/archive/article/0,,20150527,00.html" target="_blank">ring</a>. All this talk about rocks got us thinking about some other celebrity proposals, so we decided to spotlight a few memorable engagement rings. <big>Kim Kardashian & Kris Humphries</big> When it comes to size, Spears' ring from Trawick is small compared to <a href="/news/articles/1664525/kim-kardashian-kris-humphries-engagement.jhtml">Kim Kardashian's monster-size rock</a>. When Kris Humphries popped the question earlier this year, he gave her a 20.5-carat Lorraine Schwartz diamond. Of course, the size of the ring didn't guarantee lasting marital bliss: the couple <a href="/news/articles/1673465/kim-kardashian-kris-humphries-divorce-statement.jhtml">split after 72 days</a> of marriage. <big> Beyoncé & Jay-Z</big> Like Humpdash, Jay-Z, who is expecting his first <a href="/news/articles/1669849/beyonce-pregnant-vmas.jhtml">child with wife Beyoncé</a>, also went the Lorraine Schwartz route. He gave his pop-star lady love an 18-carat ring back in 2007. The couple kept their wedding ceremony under wraps. <big>Kristin Cavallari & Jay Cutler</big> While it has been a bumpy engagement for former "Hills" star <a href="/news/articles/1675147/kristin-cavallari-jay-cutler-engaged-again.jhtml">Kristin Cavallari and her football player</a> fiancé Jay Cutler, the couple announced they were engaged again last month. Cutler opted to use the same 5.2-carat ring he'd given the MTV reality star back in April when he first decided to put a ring on it. <big> Hilary Duff & Mike Comrie </big> Before Mike Comrie asked <a href="http://hollywoodcrush.mtv.com/2010/02/24/hilary-duffs-giant-engagement-ring-details-emerge">mama-to-be Hilary Duff</a> to be his blushing bride last year, he reportedly spent $1 million for the sparkler, said to be about 12 to 13 carats. <big>Katy Perry & Russell Brand</big> <a href="/news/articles/1629130/katy-perry-engaged-to-russell-brand-rep-confirms.jhtml">Russell Brand also gifted Katy Perry</a> with a ring of about 12 to 13 carats when he proposed last year to <a href="/news/articles/1676073/best-artists-of-2011-katy-perry.jhtml">MTV's 2011 Artist of the Year</a>. The comedian asked the pop star to marry him while the two were in India. The couple would later re-create that magic when they also married in the country in October 2010. Share your well-wishes for Britney and Jason in the comments!

'21 Jump Street,' 'Cabin in the Woods' and 'Killer Joe' are sure to create a buzz at the South by Southwest film festival in Austin, Texas.

We're just a few short days away from the start of the annual South by Southwest film festival in Austin, Texas, and just like the 17 years of action-packed programming that have come before it, this year is no different. Some fun food for thought for fact fans: This year, there will be 132 feature films playing at 10 venues, 12 hours a day for nine days. There are 74 world premieres, 17 North American premieres and 11 U.S. premieres, with 58 films by first-time directors, all of which were selected from some 5,271 submissions, a 7 percent increase over last year.

Impressed yet? We've been poring over the official SXSW schedule for weeks in an effort to highlight the most noteworthy and buzzworthy films in this year's lineup, narrowing the list from 132 to the five films we anticipate being the biggest crowd-pleasers. In no particular order, here are five films that are sure to have people talking:

"Cabin in the Woods"
All you really need to know about this film is that it comes from the brain of Joss Whedon and that it's a genuine horror movie. The official description bills it as such: Five friends go to a remote cabin in the woods, bad things happen — which just about sums it up, except for the fact that a lot of mind-blowing things occur, and it's a horror film that should make as big a splash as "Scream" did in 1996. Cast: Kristen Connolly, Fran Kranz, Anna Hutchison, Chris Hemsworth, Jesse Williams, Richard Jenkins and Bradley Whitford.

"Killer Joe"
The SXSW-specific selling points of this film are easy. First, Texas golden boy Matthew McConaughey plays a crazy contract killer. Second, the plot revolves around a desperate Texas debtor (Emile Hirsch) who plots to kill his mother with help of his family (Thomas Haden Church, Gina Gershon), who are asked to offer up their teenage daughter (Juno Temple) as a retainer to hire the hitman. Third, the film just landed an NC-17 rating for all of its gratuitous violence. Bonus highbrow fact: The seemingly crazy story is based on Pulitzer Prize-winner Tracy Letts' ("August: Osage County") award-winning play.

"21 Jump Street"
Yes, this is a big-screen reboot of a very popular TV show from the '80s. No, it does not star Johnny Depp, but he might make an appearance. "21 Jump Street" is the biggest, most-buzzworthy name on this list, chiefly because of all the positive, uproarious feedback from copious advance screenings. The movie is the epitome of a crowd-pleaser, with a talented all-star cast: Jonah Hill, Channing Tatum, Brie Larson, Dave Franco, Rob Riggle, Ice Cube and plenty more. In a nutshell, it is the story of two mediocre new police officers who are sent to work undercover at a high school to try to infiltrate its troublesome drug ring. The film has just about everything: action, adventure, laugh-out-loud comedy and a little bit of romance, plus some killer surprise cameos.

"Big Easy Express"
This film is almost quintessentially SXSW in that it fully captures the spirit of what the festival is all about, exposing people to different aspects of art, culture and commerce. Directed by Emmett Malloy, who also helmed the White Stripes doc "Under Great White Northern Lights," "Big Easy Express" features folk music-friendly bands Mumford & Sons, Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros and Old Crow Medicine Show as they travel from Oakland, California, to New Orleans on an eight-day railroad tour/musical adventure in the summer of 2011. It's a film that is full of warmth, good music and good vibes that will make you feel like a part of the party while sad that you missed it. Bonus fact: The bands are making the trek to Austin for a special performance event pegged to the film's premiere.

Super Secret Screening / The Entire Midnighters Series
The Super Secret Screening is not actually a film title, but a placeholder for the fest's much-buzzed-about special-event film presentation that has been around for 15 years. This screening is always a big hit because it involves a very high-profile guest and a crowd-pleasing film, which is more often than not a highly anticipated upcoming release. Also, the SXSW folks have fun with its listing in the program: "Director(s): Can't tell you. Producer(s): Who knows? Screenwriter(s): Your guess is as good as mine. Cinematographer: Someone amazing. Principal Cast: Great actors." The Midnighters series, of which the Super Secret Screening is a part, is worth a mention because these 11 or so films are usually genre-friendly and outside the box, most of them graphic and violently so. The Midnighters this year are: "The Aggression Scale," "Citadel," "Girls Against Boys," "Intruders," "Iron Sky," "John Dies at the End," "Modus Anomali," "[REC] 3: Genesis," "The Tall Man" and "V/H/S."

'I'm fascinated by her,' Cowell says of singer, who's rumored to be contender to join show.
By Jocelyn Vena

There are several women's names currently being tossed around as potential judges for the upcoming season of "X Factor." Avril Lavigne, <a href="/news/articles/1679730/x-factor-new-judges-hosts.jhtml">Janet Jackson and Britney Spears</a> are the leading rumored contenders to replace <a href="/news/articles/1678191/paula-abdul-exits-x-factor.jhtml">Nicole Scherzinger and Paula Abdul</a> for the show's completely revamped second season, which kicks off later this year. In a recent press call, Simon Cowell would not confirm who producers were talking to, but he did not deny that Jackson was on the table. "You can probably count on two girls," fellow judge L.A. Reid added. "That we can confirm." Cowell recently addressed the Britney buzz on Billy Bush's <a href="http://www.accesshollywood.com/billy-bush/simon-cowell-x-factor-would-be-a-walk-in-the-park-for-britney-spears_articletab_61327" target="_blank">radio show</a>, continuing to play coy about the chatter. "Well, I'm fascinated by her. The fact that she's still one of the most talked-about — not just pop stars, but people — in the world today means that you've got this star power. This girl's got resilience, and the fact that she's survived this and she's still hot, she's still having hit records and she's still controversial ... there's a reason for that. "I would think that if she's managed to sustain a family, a career, which is tough, this is a walk in the park," he added, noting that he believes she would be a good judge. While Cowell seems to be dancing around the issue, British "X Factor" judge Louis Walsh may have let the cat out of the bag in an <a href="http://www.breatheheavy.com/2012/02/uk-x-factor-judge-confirms-talks-with-britney/?utm_medium=twitter&utm_source=twitterfeed" target="_blank">interview</a> on U.K. talk show "Craig Doyle Live." He shared that Spears was indeed talking to producers about possibly joining the show. "I know he is talking to Britney. I know he's definitely talking to Britney to do the American show. Absolutely true and maybe Janet Jackson," he said. In the end, Cowell summed up the current spate of rumors on that conference call. "There's a load of speculation, some true, some not true. It's true to say that a lot more people have entered the frame this year. We were waiting to see who was going to contact us before we actually contacted people," he said last week. "We're in that place right now, which is a good place to be in. We will meet a number of people over the next few weeks, mainly to explain to them that this is a big commitment when you do a show like this because of the mentoring aspect."

From Britney and Jason to K-Stew and R-Pattz, we look back at the best high-profile pair-ups of the year.
By Jocelyn Vena

From young love to established romantic empires, 2011 was all about PDA. Some of La La Land's most A-list couples weren't shy about flaunting the love they share. From musicians to actors to everyone in between, the last 12 months were all about sharing the love. As the year winds down, MTV News is reflecting on some of our favorite couples of the year. <div class="player-placeholder right" id="vid:703500" width="240" height="211"></div> <big>Britney Spears and Jason Trawick</big> The couple walked red carpets, gave each other shout-outs at <a href="/news/articles/1669846/britney-spears-vmas-best-pop-video.jhtml">awards shows</a> and even got naked together in <a href="/news/articles/1672795/britney-spears-criminal-video-director.jhtml">Britney's "Criminal" video</a>, but it wasn't until December that they decided to make it official. After two years of dating, Spears and Trawick took their relationship to the next level, with confirmation that Jason <a href="/news/articles/1676120/britney-spears-is-engaged.jhtml">put a ring on it</a>. The pair celebrated their love and their impending nuptials in Las Vegas. Their engagement sparked headlines and left Spears "glowing." <a href="http://newsroom.mtv.com/2011/12/27/who-was-your-favorite-celebrity-couple-of-2011-poll/"><big>Who is your top couple of 2011? Vote in our Newsroom poll!</big></a> <big>Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez</big> Summing up <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/bieber_justin/artist.jhtml">Justin Bieber</a> and <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/gomez__selena/artist.jhtml">Selena Gomez</a>'s year into a little blurb isn't that easy. They went to <a href="/news/articles/1658832/justin-bieber-selena-gomez-vanity-fair-oscars.jhtml">events</a> together, and Bieber lavishly <a href="/news/articles/1671462/justin-bieber-selena-gomez-staples-center.jhtml">rented the Staples Center</a> just to watch "Titanic." And when they weren't chilling out, they were giving shine to each other's hard work. Or bringing each other gifts. Remember when Bieber showed Selena his <a href="/news/articles/1669881/vmas-justin-bieber-selena-gomez.jhtml">pet snake, Johnson</a>, at the VMAs? Yes, we knew you wouldn't forget. <big>Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson</big> The two "Twilight" stars seem poised to make our favorite couples lists for years to come. While in years past, they've remained under the radar, this year they came out of their shell and opened up about one another in interviews. Who could forget the time that K-Stew referred to her not-so-mysterious <a href="/news/articles/1672006/kristen-stewart-rob-pattinson-english-boyfriend.jhtml">"English" boyfriend</a> in an interview? We're assuming not R-Pattz. <div class="player-placeholder right" id="vid:686198" width="240" height="211"></div> <big>Beyoncé and Jay-Z</big> OK, so <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/knowles_beyonce/artist.jhtml">Beyoncé</a> and <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/jay_z/artist.jhtml">Jay-Z</a> have been together for, like, an eternity, but it wasn't until this year that the pair really had everyone buzzing. When Beyoncé stepped out at the VMAs, her expanding midsection and flashy performance was the ultimate <a href="/news/articles/1669849/beyonce-pregnant-vmas.jhtml">pregnancy announcement</a>. Jay-Z didn't seem to mind all the attention. He celebrated the baby news in the audience with his pal Kanye West. <big>Wiz Khalifa and Amber Rose</big> Amber Rose rebounded from her relationship with Kanye West by falling in love with <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/wiz_khalifa/artist.jhtml">Wiz Khalifa</a>. The couple took the world on their wild relationship ride, from <a href="http://rapfix.mtv.com/2011/03/30/amber-rose-joins-beau-wiz-khalifa-on-rapfix-live/">doing interviews together</a> to <a href="/news/articles/1672027/wiz-khalifa-amber-rose-wedding-rumors.jhtml">sparking rumors</a> that they had tied the knot. These two kept everyone talking and they don't seem to mind the attention, or spending lots of time with one another. <a href="https://www.facebook.com/mtvnews/posts/347755691907862">Did we forget your favorite couple of 2011? Perez Hilton reports that January 24 episode includes a 'Beat It' and 'Billie Jean' mash-up.

"Glee" has already dedicated entire episodes to <a href="/news/articles/1637098/madonna-gives-props-to-glee-episode.jhtml">Madonna</a>, <a href="/news/articles/1648829/britney-spears-glee-episode-everything-you-need-to-know.jhtml">Britney Spears</a> and <a href="/news/articles/1639871/glee-lady-gaga-episode-is-fantastic-matthew-morrison-says.jhtml">Lady Gaga</a>, and come 2012, it's the King of Pop's turn. A rumored set list for the January 24 "Glee" Michael Jackson tribute episode has hit the Web, and it features some of the late singer's greatest hits. <a href="http://perezhilton.com/2011-12-27-glee-michael-jackson-tribute-episode-setlist#.TvoRm0rkk7A" target="_blank">Perez Hilton</a> reports that 14 tracks have made the final cut, although the list has yet to be confirmed by anyone connected with the show. <div class="player-placeholder right" id="vid:549513.id:1645343" width="240" height="211"></div> The set list (along with who will perform the track) reportedly includes "Wanna Be Startin' Somethin' " (Blaine), "Bad" (the New Directions and the Warblers), "I Just Can't Stop Loving You" (Finn and Rachel), "Smooth Criminal" (Santana and Sebastian), "Never Can Say Goodbye" (Quinn), "In the Closet" (Brittany and Santana), "We Are the World" (the New Directions and the Warblers), "Black and White" (Puck), "Ghost"/"Monster" (New Directions), "Beat It"/"Billie Jean" (Warblers), "The Way You Make Me Feel" (Kurt) and "Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough" (Artie). This is hardly the first time the show has paid homage to Jackson. Back in 2010, the <a href="/news/articles/1657395/glee-thriller.jhtml">New Directions performed his track "Thriller,"</a> complete with zombie garb, during an episode that aired after the Super Bowl. The show has also previously covered "P.Y.T. (Pretty Young Thing)" and "Man in the Mirror." Back in 2010, the cast of the hit Fox show had only imagined what it would be like to have an entire <a href="http://hollywoodcrush.mtv.com/2010/08/09/glee-michael-jackson/">episode dedicated to Jackson</a>. "I would love to do a Michael Jackson episode," Amber Riley told MTV News at the time. "You know, it's so many [songs that I love], but my favorite song by him is 'Human Nature.' I love that song." While Riley seemed psyched about the opportunity, castmate Jenna Ushkowitz found the possibility a little more daunting. "That's a scary, scary episode to do," she said. "[But] that would be absolutely amazing." Are you happy with the rumored set list? What's missing? Share your thoughts in the comments below!

First single from Trent Reznor/ Atticus Ross soundtrack is Karen O cover of Led Zeppelin song.
By Gil Kaufman

You kind of can't go wrong when the soundtrack you've put together for one of the most eagerly anticipated literary adaptations in years kicks off <a href="/music/artist/yeah_yeah_yeahs/artist.jhtml">Yeah Yeah Yeahs</a> singer Karen O's take on <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/led_zeppelin/artist.jhtml">Led Zeppelin</a>'s "Immigrant Song." <div class="player-placeholder right" id="vid:693384" width="240" height="211"></div> Fans heard the throbbing industrial take on the rock classic cooked up by former Nine Inch Nails mastermind and O when a trailer for the David Fincher-directed "Girl With the Dragon Tattoo" leaked back in May. And on Thursday, Oscar-winning industrial-rocker-turned-film composer Reznor and musical partner Atticus Ross unveiled the full track list for their "Tattoo" score album. The follow-up to their award-winning "The Social Network" score was a labor of love, according to a <a href="http://nin.com/?id=102677" target="_blank">post</a> Reznor put up on the NIN site on Thursday announcing the disc. "For the last fourteen months Atticus and I have been hard at work on David Fincher's 'The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo,' " he wrote about the American version of the tale of pierced and punished hacker <a href="/news/articles/1655879/rooney-mara-dragon-tattoo.jhtml">Lisbeth Salander (Rooney Mara)</a> and her muckraking journalist compatriot <a href="/news/articles/1667542/daniel-craig-rooney-mara-girl-with-the-dragon-tattoo.jhtml">Mikael Blomkvist (Daniel Craig)</a>. "We laughed, we cried, we lost our minds and in the process made some of the most beautiful and disturbing music of our careers. The result is a sprawling three-hour opus." The album will be released on iTunes on December 9 in two versions. Right now, you can download the Karen O song on iTunes when you pre-order the 39-track album. That download purchase will also give you a link to the <a href="/news/articles/1675297/girl-with-the-dragon-tattoo-trailer-extended.jhtml">eight-minute "Dragon Tattoo" trailer</a>, for which Reznor and Ross created a unique score. <div class="player-placeholder right" id="vid:674399" width="240" height="211"></div> But, if you visit the <a href="http://www.nullco.com/GDT/usd.php" target="_blank">NIN online store</a>, Reznor is offering the soundtrack in a variety of forms, from a free six-track sampler to a deluxe 3,000-piece limited-edition signed $300 package with your choice of MP3 formats; the full album on six pieces of 180 gram vinyl; a deluxe book package with a metal cover; an exclusive custom 8 GB metal razor blade USB drive pendant containing the full album; and a fold-out poster. The full album score track list is as follows: » "Immigrant Song" (Led Zeppelin cover) [ft. Karen O] » "She Reminds Me of You" » "People Lie All the Time" » "Pinned and Mounted" » "Perihelion" » "What If We Could?" » "With the Flies" » "Hidden in Snow" » "A Thousand Details" » "One Particular Moment" » "I Can't Take It Anymore" » "How Brittle the Bones" » "Please Take Your Hand Away" » "Cut Into Pieces" » "The Splinter" » "An Itch" » "Hypomania" » "Under the Midnight Sun" » "Aphelion" » "You're Here" » "The Same as the Others" » "A Pause for Reflection" » "While Waiting" » "The Seconds Drag" » "Later Into the Night" » "Parallel Timeline With Alternate Outcome" » "Another Way of Caring" » "A Viable Construct" » "Revealed in the Thaw" » "Millennia" » "We Could Wait Forever" » "Oraculum" » "Great Bird of Prey" » "The Heretics" » "A Pair of Doves" » "Infiltrator" » "The Sound of Forgetting" » "Of Secrets" » "Is Your Love Strong Enough?" ¿Y a ti? ¿Qué te parece todo esto?

In this week's Hobnobbing, we compile a wish list of other movie merch we want to own.
By Amy Wilkinson

Photo: Lionsgate

"Hunger Games" fans got an early Christmas present Thursday (December 1) in the form of three movie tie-in covers revealed by Scholastic featuring several characters from the March 23 release. "The Hunger Games: Movie Tie-In Edition," "The Hunger Games: Official Illustrated Movie Companion" and "The Hunger Games Tribute Guide" are all due February 7, with a fourth title, "The World of The Hunger Games," hitting bookstore shelves the same day as the film's debut.

To be sure, these new tomes will offer plenty of insights into the post-revolution, dystopian universe created by author Suzanne Collins in her YA trilogy. But why stop at books? There are plenty more Panem playthings we'd love to see hit the market. Here's our wish list for 2012 (are you taking note, Santa?):

Katniss' bow and arrow
Forget fussy nail polish. What we love most about heroine Katniss Everdeen is her ferocious fervor. After all, the tribute can spear any object with a single arrow — a skill we'd love to master (using a regulation bull's-eye, of course — none of this "killing people" business ... ).

"Hunger Games" Hunk of the Month Calendar
There's no denying the men of "The Hunger Games" are easy on the eyes. And while we'd never want to objectify them, we certainly wouldn't mind their help counting off the months until the sequel, "Catching Fire," drops in 2013. They can even leave their shirts on if they want.

Peeta's Pastries
Get Pepperidge Farm on the phone, stat! We have a soft spot in our heart for the baker's son and wouldn't mind sampling a few of his tasty treats (if you know what we mean). A PBJ on Peeta bread? Simply delicious.

What official "Hunger Games" merch would you like to own? Sound off in the comments below and tweet me @amymwilk with your thoughts and suggestions for future columns!

'I've listened to their music since I was a child,' says the R&B diva, who recorded 'Stairway to Heaven' and 'Whole Lotta Love.'
By James Montgomery, with reporting by Larry Carroll

Mary J. Blige
Photo: MTV News

You wouldn't peg Mary J Blige as the black-light-and-tapestry sort, but, as has become readily apparent in recent weeks, she absolutely loves Led Zeppelin.

In early February, reports began circulating that Blige had re-recorded Zeppelin's classic "Stairway to Heaven," working with Travis Barker, "American Idol" judge Randy Jackson and guitarist Steve Vai on the track, which is slated to appear on the international reissue of her Stronger With Each Tear album, due Monday.

But after she had recorded "Stairway," Blige continued to get the Led out, covering another Zeppelin classic — the thunderous "Whole Lotta Love" — for the album too. And when MTV News caught up with her on the Essence Black Women in Hollywood red carpet, she told us all about channeling her inner Robert Plant for the tracks, a process that came much easier than you'd probably imagine.

"I did Led Zeppelin's 'Stairway to Heaven' and 'Whole Lotta Love' — it's crazy," she said. "I am a Led Zeppelin fan. I'm not going to say I've been to their concerts, but I've listened to their music since I was a child, and it's always moved me, especially 'Stairway to Heaven,' and 'Whole Lotta Love' is just fun."

Blige also said she recorded another new song — a "club record" called "I Can't Wait" — for the re-release. And while it's only slated to hit shelves outside the U.S., she hopes her fans will get a chance to hear all the new songs pretty soon.

"I want y'all to hear it," she laughed.

'I have not been approached to fill in for Robert Plant on the Zeppelin tour, but that isn't to say I won't be,' singer says.
By Chris Harris

Chris Cornell
Photo: MTV News

Former Soundgarden and Audioslave frontman Chris Cornell has spoken out for the first time about rumors that he's been asked to fill in for Robert Plant on a proposed Led Zeppelin reunion tour. The trek would feature original guitarist Jimmy Page, original bassist John Paul Jones and Jason Bonham taking over on drums for his late father, John Bonham.

Cornell has been mentioned — along with Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl, former Van Halen frontman Sammy Hagar, White Stripes mastermind Jack White and Alter Bridge's Myles Kennedy — as a potential Plant fill-in. Plant has already said that he wouldn't take part in the tour.

"I have not been approached so far to fill in for Robert Plant on the upcoming Zeppelin tour, but that isn't to say I won't be," Cornell told MTV News. "I've heard that from about 200 people now, and it might be one of those situations where it's just an online rumor or it might be true. But if you see anyone from Led Zeppelin around, let me know. I think I should actually fill in for Jimmy Page on the Robert Plant/ Alison Krauss tour."

Cornell's denial comes just a day after Aerosmith guitarist Brad Whitford confirmed reports that frontman Steven Tyler recently met with Zeppelin for an impromptu jam session. "They did it for fun," Whitford said during an appearance on the syndicated show "Todd N Tyler Radio Empire." "I actually think Jimmy wanted Steven to come over and play a little bit because I think he was trying to light a fire under Robert."

Rumors of a Zeppelin reunion tour have abounded since the iconic band played a single reunion set last year at London's O2 Arena. Twisted Sister frontman Dee Snider added fuel to the fire last month when he revealed that the group was thinking of touring, with or without Plant.

According to Snider, the rest of the band told Plant, " 'We're all rehearsed, we're ready to go. Here's a gazillion dollars on the table. If you don't do it, we're going out with this kid [Myles Kennedy].' "

"And he can sing the sh-- out of Zeppelin," Snider added. "They're going to hope that Robert, at the last minute, will go, 'OK,' and step in."

In a recent interview, Jones told BBC Radio Devon that a new singer was being sought to take over for Plant. "We are trying out a couple of singers," he said. "We want to do it. It's sounding great, and we want to get on and get out there."

But Jones insists that he, Page and Bonham aren't interested in finding a Plant clone. "It's got to be right," he said. "There's no point in just finding another Robert. You could get that out of a tribute band, but we don't want to be our own tribute band. There would be a record and a tour, but everyone has to be onboard."

Of course, even if Zeppelin were to approach him, Cornell might be too busy to take over vocals for the band. His upcoming Timbaland-produced solo LP, Scream, will be released within the next few months. Cornell told MTV News last month that some of his fans might consider Scream something of a departure, but he doesn't see it that way.

"It makes me happy that there's this perception that I have a group of fans that I'm now sort of throwing a curve at and what their reaction will be," he said. "But I've been in this situation so many times already. When I put out [1999's] Euphoria Morning, my main goal was to create an album that sounded like nothing I'd done in Soundgarden, and I did that. I also had that with Temple of the Dog, where I showed up with songs that weren't necessarily riff-based. And then, of course, the pairing of me and members of Rage Against the Machine had everyone sort of speculating about what that would sound like.

"It feels like I've done this so many times that when it's presented to me as being a departure, I feel that's a misconception," he added. "I feel like that's my theme at this point."

During band's rehearsal break for Sunday's Movie Awards, we put Foos to the test.
By Ryan J. Downey, with reporting by Jim Cantiello

The Foo Fighters' Dave Grohl

UNIVERSAL CITY, California — Hard rock, heavy metal, hardcore and punk have long gone hand-in-hand with evil wizards, magic, vampires and werewolves. And with a collective sub-cultural pedigree that includes stints in the Germs, No Use for a Name, Sunny Day Real Estate, Scream and some band called Nirvana, you'd think the Foo Fighters — set to perform at Sunday's Movie Awards — would know their "Potter" from their Zeppelin. Certainly they can recognize a "wand" reference and pinpoint its origin?

Right? Before we put MTV News' magically crafted trivia to the band, it seemed safe to assume the Foos would accurately distinguish between the words of Harry Potter, a "Twilight" character and Led Zeppelin. But was their underground nerd cred blown to shreds? Read on — and click the video! — to see how the Foo Fighters fared when we caught up with them on the Universal Studios lot, shortly after they finished rehearsing their Movie Awards performance.

Our own Jim Cantiello played dungeon master as Dave Grohl, Nate Mendel, Taylor Hawkins, Chris Shiflett and Pat Smear were given a series of semi-famous lines and asked whether they originated with "Harry Potter," the "Twilight Saga" or the lyrics of hard-rock pioneers Led Zeppelin.

Here's a sampling of a few of those one-liners:

» "The elder wand, the most powerful wand ever made."

» "Why don't you let me be yours ever truly? Can I make your garden grow?"

» "You're lying, Dolores! You mustn't tell lies!"

Can you guess whether the lines above came from the "Potter" flicks, "Twilight" or Robert Plant?

Watch as the Foos try their best to do exactly that. Then tune in to the MTV Movie Awards on Sunday to catch the Foo Fighters rock the stage with their new single, "Walk."

Will wizards, vampires or dream thieves steal the 2011 MTV Movie Awards? Find out June 5, when the 20th annual show airs live at 9 p.m. ET/PT. Tune in at 7:30 p.m. ET/PT that night for the "America's Best Dance Crew" finale and Movie Awards pre-show, loaded with live action from the red carpet, exclusive movie clips and a special edition of "After Hours."

Most critics praise film's visuals and performances, although some take issue with its length.
By Eric Ditzian

Asa Butterfield in "Hugo"
Photo: Paramount Pictures

We're big "Hugo" fans here in the MTV Newsroom, as we make clear over at Movies Blog, calling Martin Scorsese's 3-D film a "love letter to cinema" and "like nothing you've ever seen from the Oscar-winning filmmaker before."

We're not the only ones raving about it. Critics are celebrating the movie's bold visual style and strong performances. The only issue anyone seems to have with "Hugo" is that there's just too much of it: The story — following the young orphan Hugo's (Asa Butterfield) adventures in a 1930s Parisian metro station, his battles with the station inspector (Sacha Baron Cohen) and his friendship with a girl (Chloë Grace Moretz) also living in the station who is being raised by film pioneer Georges Méliès (Ben Kingsley) — chugs forward too slowly before finally springing to life. Read on for those critiques and more in our "Hugo" review roundup.

The Story " 'Hugo' is the tale of a boy, one of fiction's sentimental orphans, and the world he invents, yet, unsurprisingly, its most heartfelt passages are about Méliès. The old filmmaker is as broken and in need of revival as the automaton, and while you can guess what happens, it's the getting there — how the clock is wound — that surprises and often delights. Waves of melancholy wash over the story and keep the treacle at bay, as do the spasms of broad comedy, much of it nimbly executed by Mr. Baron Cohen." — Manohla Dargis, The New York Times

The Visuals " 'Hugo's' use of the third dimension is exceptionally well thought out and essential to the film's ability to make a children's vision of the world come to life. Making that world a Parisian one has also inspired 'Hugo's' visual team, led by production designer Dante Ferretti, and the film's numerous shots floating over the rooftops of Paris are always fantastic. As with the original novel, the wordless parts of 'Hugo,' including a masterful re-creation of a famous train wreck, are very much its strength." — Kenneth Turan, Los Angeles Times

The Performances "Although he ultimately comes through with a winning performance, Butterfield, previously seen in 'Son of Rambow' and 'The Wolfman,' seems a bit stiff and uncertain in the early-going. ... By contrast, Moretz ('Kick-Ass,' 'Let Me In'), with her beaming warmth and great smile, is captivating as a girl who leaps at the chance for some adventure outside of books. Refusing to sentimentalize, Kingsley catches both the deeply submerged hurt and eventual pride of an artist long but not forever erased from history." — Todd McCarthy, The Hollywood Reporter

The Finale "[D]uring 'Hugo's' final 20 minutes or so, when Scorsese mounts a lavish reenactment of those early days of the art form, the film truly comes to life, as the story's preoccupation with mechanics and logistical dot-connecting gives way to imagination, magic and swashes of lurid color. ... With the director so clearly in his element and so affectionately in control, 'Hugo' ends as a triumph, bursting with the poetry, verve and irrepressible love befitting a match made in movie heaven." — Ann Hornaday, The Washington Post

The Final Word "[T]he story — period details and mysteries notwithstanding — is too slight to support this length. It's an 80 minute bon bon struggling to break out of a two hour and ten minute souffle. Still, movie buffs, especially fans of early cinema history, will be transfixed by scenes in the latter acts — movie-making, as it was being invented. It's why Scorsese chose to make the film. It's where his heart truly is with this material. And it's no surprise that this corner of his wondrous little picture is where he chose to take a cameo, immortalizing himself in the history of the medium he grew up loving and mastering." — Roger Moore, Orlando Sentinel

Clichés Warner Bros. needs to avoid in trailer, which premieres December 16, in this edition of The Weekly Rising.
By Kevin P. Sullivan

A great trailer is a challenge to pull off. It needs to strike a delicate balance between not showing enough and giving everything away. A trailer establishes the tone and look of a film without getting too deep into the story to ruin the actual movie.

The pressure is now on for "The Dark Knight Rises" and its theatrical trailer, which will premiere in front of "Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows" on December 16. With so many looking forward to the conclusion of Christopher Nolan's Batman trilogy, the first full-length trailer needs to make the appropriate impact. Unfortunately, a great trailer doesn't always get made. Studio execs can tinker with it into oblivion in the hopes of hitting all four quadrants.

Here's an outline for the "Dark Knight" trailer I don't want to see.

Vrooommmm, tick, tick, tick, tick, tick.

Fade into the Warner Bros. logo surrounded by falling building debris, just like the teaser trailer.

Vrooommmm, tick, tick, tick, tick, tick.

Fade into the Legendary Pictures logo surrounded by falling building debris, just like the teaser trailer.

Vrooommmm, tick, tick, tick, tick, tick.

Suddenly, an "Inception"-esque Bwooonnng! rings outs to remind everyone of how much we all liked that movie. That's always a good way to get people's attention. Every other vaguely sci-fi action movie since last summer has used it in their trailer. Why shouldn't we?

We pan over the Gotham cityscape. Pay no attention to the fact that it doesn't look like Chicago anymore. This is just a different part of the city, the Little Pittsburgh district. From that, we take a closer look at the city. It's seven years later and things aren't great. The homeless riddle the streets. Someone smashes a window with a brick. A street vendor feeds his kids the falafel he sells from his cart.

"Gotham!" yells the muffled voice of Tom Hardy, as the villainous Bane, in a voice-over, sounding kind of like an elderly British woman. "Take back your city!" While the voice speaks, we cut to a slightly older Commissioner Gordon staring at the broken Bat signal, then John Blake slamming some handcuffed punk against the hood of a car. Finally, there's a slow fade onto Bruce Wayne. He's staring at his Batsuit, stored behind a thick pane of glass in the fully restored Batcave.

Transition to soft piano music. Tell Hans to string together four or five chords. Play them each 10 seconds apart. This will let them know there's some really heavy stuff going on here. "Master Wayne?" Alfred calls from the top of the stairs. He's in his bathroom, and it's clearly late. Bruce turns to look at his loyal butler.

"Are you all right?" Alfred asks, with sadness in his face. We're back with Bruce. He turns to face the encased suit and studies it for a moment. "I'm fine."

Now tell Hans to start up that cool chanting he had all those nerds do online. The one they yelled into their parents' computer.

Deshy! Deshy!

Bah-Sah-Rah! Bah-Sah-Rah!

The citizens are gathering, and it's not for "The Taste of Gotham" — that's next week. They're revolting. There are riots in the streets. Things are on fire. People are jaywalking all over the place. It's chaos! Everyone in Gotham is heading in one direction, toward something that looks like courthouse steps.

Toward Bane! He's there in his new fur-lined coat from the Burlington Coat Factory. He watches as people approach him and the mercenaries flank him on each side. The picture of Harvey Dent is in his hand. The mercenaries drag forward a hostage. He looks like a businessman, clearly some government type. Let Nolan figure it out. Bane is going to kill him.

We're back in the Batcave. Bruce watches on a set of monitors everything that's taking place. When he sees the hostage, he bolts for his suit. Finally decked out as Batman, he heads for the Batpod, but someone is already there. It's Catwoman! She kicks the bike to life and takes off out of the cave. "Perfect," Batman says.

From there, just cut together a few seconds of each awesome set piece, and let the audience know about everything cool that's going to happen.

Bane and Batman fight. Batman leads the police against Bane and his army of ticked-off citizens. Hint at the origin of Bane. We finish at a party. Alfred brings Bruce over to a most delightful young lady he just met. He's hoping to get his master over the whole "Rachel blew up" thing. We approach a raven-haired beauty from behind.

"Master Bruce, I have to introduce you to the most delightful young lady. Miss, you were saying your name was?" She turns. "Selina Kyle."

Everyone's minds explode. That's how you make a trailer. If Warner Bros. wants to make the fans happy with the first theatrical trailer, they should focus on tone and not the story. We're fast-forwarding seven or eight years, so a lot has changed. There's more than enough to catch up on just within the city of Gotham to fill a trailer. What kind of shape is Bruce Wayne in? Has he been gone all these years? The detail about the chronological jump forward is just the right note to whet appetites and keep people hooked until July.

Be sure to check out all of our updates from over the weekend on our Splash Page.
