For once, Lady Gaga is drawing attention for what she isn't wearing! In the October issue of Harper's Bazaar, Gaga, 25, poses with no crazy hats, no wild fashions -- and nearly no makeup. It's pretty stunning to see the "You and I" singer looking so natural. But of course, Gaga doesn't see it that way.
"I don't really view it as 'natural,'" she says in the accompanying interview. "I think that artifice is the new reality. It's more about just being honest and sincere to the core of what you do. Whether I'm wearing lots of makeup or no makeup, I'm always the same person inside."
Does that mean that Gaga feels more "natural" as, say, the half-cyborg or bathtub mermaid from her latest video? She tells the magazine that she doesn't see her outlandish get-ups as artificial creations; rather, they're her personal fantasies made reality. And she points out, quite smartly, that her fantasies are no crazier than the ones fashion magazines and music videos are accustomed to selling.
"Don't you think that what's on the cover of a magazine is quite artificial?" she asks. "There's this idea that it's all natural, but everything's been staged to look natural. It is also an invention. It's just that my inventions are different. I often get asked about my artifice, but isn't fashion based on the idea that we can create a fantasy?"
The magazine cover -- Bazaar's first black-and-white cover in 20 years! -- is a far cry from Gaga's last Bazaar cover, for which she wore pink hair, heavy eyeliner and sky-high Mugler shoes with daggers for heels. But the two covers have one key thing in common: Both were styled by Nicola Formichetti, creator of the infamous meat dress. What could be more natural than that?
